Day 1, Sunday, August 15
- Our country’s first national park,
Yellowstone, was established for the benefit and enjoyment of
all people. Our westward jaunt begins by traveling across the
vastness of South Dakota. We’ll swing through the South Dakota
Badlands and make picture stops at the colorful scenic
overlooks. Wall Drug is known all over the world for free ice
water, 5 cent coffee, and buffalo burgers. (Frankly, the donuts
aren’t bad either.) After coffee we’ll continue to Rapid City, SD,
and check into our hotel.
Day 2, Monday, August 16-
Our coach travels past the Black Hills and slips into
Wyoming, follows I - 90 through Sheridan and on to the Big Horn
Mountains. This is some of the most interesting scenery in the
state. Arriving to Cody we check into our hotel, the Bear
Tooth Inn. Tonight we join the crowd at the Cody Night Rodeo,
watching the rough and tumble action of local cowboys. After “Yee
Hawing” the night away we’re all ready to turn in and get a little
shut-eye. (B) (L)
Day 3, Tuesday, August
17 - Our first stop this morning
is the fishing bridge at the east entrance of
Yellowstone National Park. From here we mosey south to
the “Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River.” It is a
short walk to the Upper and Lower Falls at Artist Point
and the view is worth every step. Driving on the South Loop road
past West Thumb Basin, we arrive at Old Faithful Lodge to see
the eruption of Old Faithful. After eating lunch at Old
Faithful Lodge we continue west to our accommodations at West
Yellowstone, MT. (B)
Day 4, Wednesday, August
18 - Driving back into
Yellowstone National Park, we turn north to explore the upper
loop of the park. Our first stop will be at one of the strangest
places on earth, the Norris Geyser Basin. In this one area
you will see every type of thermal activity. You’ll be busy snapping
pictures of the paint pots, mud volcanoes, and geysers. At
Canyon you’ll have time to shop for a souvenir, mail a postcard and
eat lunch. Continuing on we will take the best route to
Mammoth Hot Springs. You’ll have plenty of time to see the
Opal Terrace, Liberty Rock and the Hot Springs. Tonight
we stay in Livingston, MT. (B) (L)
Day 5, Thursday, August
19 -
General Custer left from Fort Abraham Lincoln leading 265 men to
doom at the Battle of Little Big Horn. We’ll visit the
Custer Battlefield near Hardin, MT, learn how the battle
unfolded, through ranger talks, video, and visual exhibits. This
afternoon we travel through the rolling plains of Montana to Medora,
ND. After checking into the motel in Medora and freshening up, we
enjoy the Pitchfork Fondue and attend the Medora Musical.
The Burning Hills Singers and Dancers will entertain
us during the two hour musical dedicated to Teddy Roosevelt. (B)
(D)
Day 6, Friday, August 20

our way home you will see that large areas of the state are not
heavily populated. With usual meal stops en route, we arrive back in
Kerkhoven early evening. (B) (L)
