Day 1,
Wednesday, September 22 - Door County is a 70-mile
peninsula that juts into Lake Michigan and is sometimes known as the
“Inland Cape Cod.” There are fruit orchards and neat little fishing
villages that line the coast. Today’s travel takes us across
Minnesota and Wisconsin. Late afternoon we arrive in Door County for
a three-night stay in Sturgeon Bay. (L)
Day 2, Thursday, September 23 -
Traveling to Northport through scenic landscape, past farms, and
fishing villages, it is easy to see how Door County got its
nickname. Upon reaching the “tip” of the peninsula, a local guide
joins us, our coach is driven aboard a ferry and we cruise across
“Death’s Door Strait” to Washington Island. A noon luncheon
is included and our guide will show us the highlights of this unique
island. Late afternoon we return by ferry to the mainland and drive
to Bailey’s Harbor. Are you ready for a great meal? We watch as the
onions, potatoes and White Fish are boiled in a big black kettle
over an open fire. Then at just the right time, kerosene is thrown
on the fire, it’s a BOIL OVER! The food is served and after a
delicious meal we return to our motel at Sturgeon Bay. (B) (L) (D)
Day 3,
Friday, September 24 - Our morning will start with a
tour of the Maritime Museum where we learn about sailing
ships, pleasure crafts, marine engines, artifacts, shipwrecks and
much more. Mid-morning our local guide joins us again for a tour of
Door County Peninsula. We explore the little villages of
Ellison Bay and Sister Bay. Noon lunch is included before visiting
the Bjorklunden Stavkirke, the Peninsula State Park, tour a light
house and have a little time for shopping. Before returning to our
motel in Sturgeon Bay, we visit a local winery. After touring
the facilities you may taste the finished product and buy your
favorite wine. Tonight we enjoy a Pizza Party at our hotel. (B) (L)
